Welcome to Chahpingah Wind Farm

The Chahpingah Wind Farm is a proposed large-scale renewable energy project near Kingaroy, within the South Burnett Regional Council LGA.

The project is expected to deliver 800 MW of wind generation capacity. The project will supply clean electricity to the grid, supporting the Queensland Government’s Energy Roadmap for affordable, sustainable energy.

Once operational, the project is expected to power around 320,000 Queensland households and prevent up to two million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year.

The Chahpingah Wind Farm will also deliver regional economic benefits, employing around 200 people during construction and up to 15 ongoing operational and maintenance staff.

The project is currently in early-stage development, with ecology surveys and grid connection options studies commencing shortly. The project is expected to be fully operational by 2033.

Target

The Chahpingah Wind Farm would deliver 800 MW of renewable wind energy to the grid, contributing to the Queensland Government’s Energy Roadmap which aims to deliver an additional 6.8 GW of wind and solar generation by 2030.

Fully
Operational

Once fully operational, the project is expected to generate enough clean energy to power around 320,000 Queensland households each year and prevent almost two million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually. The project will employ around 200 people during construction and provide up to 15 ongoing operational and maintenance roles, delivering lasting economic benefits to the South Burnett region and broader regional Queensland.

Project Timeline

Development

Phase period: 2023 – 2029

The Project is currently in the early stages of development. Chahpingah Wind Farm will deploy additional wind monitoring equipment and develop strategies to guide planning approvals, EPBC approvals and connection options.

Construction

Phase period: 2030 – 2033

Including the construction of approximately 130 wind turbines, grid connection, and supporting infrastructure including road upgrades, site upgrades, site access tracks and workforce accommodation.

Commercial Operation Date

Phase period: 2033

Once fully commissioned, the Project will transition into operations and maintenance. After 30 years of operations, the wind farm will be decommissioned and rehabilitated or repowered to extend the operating life of the wind farm.

FAQs

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How did the Chahpingah Wind Farm come about?

Renewable Energy Partners (REP) has partnered with a group of Chahpingah landowners to originate a wind farm in the area. These landowners came together to seek proposals from renewable energy developers after seeing the benefits delivered by wind farm projects in the region. Through this landowner-led process, REP was selected based on its track record developing the Wambo Wind Farm, Ulinda Park Battery and Hopeland Solar Farm, and its capability in delivering complex projects in regional Queensland.

What engagement has been undertaken so far?

At this early stage, engagement activities have centred around participating landowners and elected representatives in the region, but REP will be looking to commence wider community engagement activities in 2026. In October 2025, REP CEO Luke McDonald briefed South Burnett Regional Council, including the Mayor, CEO, Councillors and senior officers, and the State Member's office on the proposed project

Why was this location chosen?

The proposed site has a strong wind resource and is ideally located close to existing transmission lines and wind farms.

Who is developing the project?

The project was originated by Renewable Energy Partners (REP) in 2023. REP brings together a team of highly motivated professionals with over 150 years of combined experience to originate and develop large-scale renewable energy projects in Australia. REP have a total of 10GW of generation in various stages of development

What approvals are required for the project?

The project is subject to Federal, State and Local Government planning and assessment processes. This includes a development application assessed under State Code 23 of the State Development Assessment Provisions, assessment under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999, and negotiation of a Community Benefits Agreement with Flinders Shire Regional Council.

How will the project benefit the local community?

The project will support local jobs and supply chain opportunities during construction and operation. Up to 200 skilled workers are anticipated to be employed during peak construction, with a dedicated local team of over 15 technicians and operators once the wind farm is operational.

What is the Community Benefit Fund?

The project is committed to contributing to the community through a Community Benefit Fund (CBF), which will operate prior to, during and after construction. The fund is separate from the Community Benefits Agreement with Council and will support local community groups, not-for-profits, sporting clubs and schools.
